Dry Writing? Beware of Too Much Touch

4108125342_68324cb0a5 Dry meatloaf? We've all had our share. Our aunt, church potlucks, the cable-car-looking diner off the highway. A dry slice of meatloaf is the mark of a cook with little confidence or an abundance of perfectionism in the kitchen.

Either way, I can almost guarantee why their meatloaf is dry.  Too much touch.

The moistest meatloaf will find the cook spill all the ingredients in the bowl, take a quick turn at mixing them together, shape it and cook it. That's it.  But too much touch — dries out the meat.

I see the same thing with writers (whether a blog, a book, a presentation, whatever).

The edit as they write, they touch it here, and then again there, and over there. Pretty soon … oops, and right over there too … pretty soon they find time has passed them and they haven't written much. What they have written, has no oomph or flow.

Too much touch.

Just spill the words, take a quick turn at an edit for shape, and put it out there.

PS – Might try a dollop of mayonnaise next time too.  In your meatloaf, that is.
