Blog Blazers: A Gold Mine of Blogging Tips & Direction
There are a lot of blogging books out there. Many are good, but I've found Blog Blazers to be a gold mine of instruction. That's why I'm recommending it to my students in one-on-one and classroom settings. Stephane Grenier quizzed 40 fantastic blog authors on how to create a high-profile, high-traffic, and high-profit blog.
This week, I'm going to share some of my findings
First, let me say I'm a bit biased towards this book. I follow many of those interviewed, including:
- Seth Godin
- David Armano
- Pamela Slim
- Ben Yoskovitz
- Anita Campbell
- Neil Patel
- Penelope Trunk
- Rohit Bhargava
- Steve Rubel
- Yaro Starak
- and Iowa's own Trent Hamm
Each author was asked 24 questions about their site and writing habits. Some make money directly from their blog, some use their site to augment their business. In every interview, I took away something. Here are some of the "money" quotes:
Joel Cheesman: "Don't rely too much on one tactic (mix in podcasts and videos with the written word)
Eric Sink: Most people don't realize how much endurance is necessary. They start a blog with the lofty goal of writing a 500 word entry every day. A month later, they've written four entries and feel like quitting
Bob Walsh: (It takes) A minimum of 3 months, more like 9 (to become a successful blogger).
There is so much in this book, I'm not going to be able to cover it in one post. Tomorrow, we'll look at some of the questions (and I'll provide my own answers to those -- hope you will too).
If you're coming to the Drake University workshop on Saturday, we'll be talking a lot about this book.
