Blog Blazers: My Answers

BlogBlazerBook
I've found Blog Blazers to be a gold mine of instruction. That's why I'm recommending it to my students in one-on-one and classroom settings. Stephane Grenier quizzed 40 fantastic blog authors on how to create a high-profile, high-traffic, and high-profit blog.

This week, I'm sharing some of my findings

One of the things I love about a book like this is that I can also answer the questions (and so can you), allowing me to define and refine my purpose. Today, I'll share my answers to some of the questions:

What makes a blog successful according to you? Is it traffic, reach, revenue, etc?
I think it's a combination of things. I've long thought about coming up with some blog-a-metric system to measure what I consider the most important numbers: incoming hyperlinks, incoming comments, feed subscribers. If these numbers grow consistently, your efforts will always prove successful.

When did you decide you finally reached success with your blog?
I've had successful moments, but I'm not sure I've "reached" the pinnacle yet. A great moment in my eyes was when I was first listed on Mack Collier's Top 25 Marketing Blogs

How long does it take to become a successful blogger?
Well, there are steps along the path. Short answer: 4-6 months. But smaller success shouldn't be ignored (first comment by someone you don't know, first link coming in, etc.)

Who do you think are the most successful bloggers on the internet today?
I've seen a few that have gone from scratch to everyone knowing them (probably because they are constantly giving and always sharing resources):
- David Armano
- Brian Clark
- Valeria Maltoni
- Drew McLellan
- Joanna Young
- Angela Maiers

Which five blogs do you regularly read?
I offered these in yesterday's post — but here's five more (plus the ones above):
- Meryl K. Evans
- Rajesh Setty
- Steve Woodruff
- Jason Falls
- Scott McLeod

Really, I subscribe to over 600 blogs, and I skim them all daily…but these make me slow down every time.

Which websites would you recommend for any new bloggers starting to blog?
I think there's four – CopyBlogger, Chris Brogan, Liz Strauss and ConverStations.  That last one is a real up-and-comer — one to watch.

Which book(s) would you recommend for new bloggers (these can range from marketing books, blogging books, etc.)
Wow.  So many. One I like is Blog Blazers! But also Join the Conversation, Tribes, and Letting Go of the Words

What is your most successful blog post ever?
The ones that get shared by others.

There have been some that spread fast, such as Twitter + Yahoo Pipes = Signal, but the one that has provided the most "A-Ha" moments has been the Eye Rests post.

What’s your biggest tip on writing a successful blog post?
Read the Eye Rests post. Or the core of my Blog Posting Mantra (one link out every time)

How important do you think are the headlines of your blog articles?

Very important, but write them after you write the post. Study magazine headlines while you're at the grocery store or book store. Here's the thing — as skimmers, we web readers will slow down for a great headline — but the content better match, or I'm not stopping next time.

Do you spend any money and time on marketing?

No money (except for Typepad and a few minor tools). We all market all of the time — some better than others. Commenting on other sites — while it shouldn't be for the sake of marketing — is a form of marketing.

What are your main methods of marketing your blog?

Engagement online and offline. Engaging is the key.

What are your quick and short five best tips for blogging?

  1. Eliminate unecessary words.
  2. Use images
  3. SCAMPER often
  4. Comment more than you post
  5. Discipline your time

What is the most common pitfall new bloggers generally fall into?

They give up too quickly. This starts from wanting to be famous too quickly. Blogging is like Farming.

If you knew what you know now when you first started, what’s the one biggest tip you’d give yourself today?
Wake up an hour earlier every day to read feeds and comment elsewhere. I'm guilty of not listening as much as I should.

What repels you the most from a blog (animations, in your face advertising, etc)?
800 words with no images, no bold phrases, no bullet points.  I don't have the time or desire to read every word.

Do you find you get more from direct monetization of your blog or from opportunities that come because of the existence of your blog?

I blog (and coach others likewise) to blog in order to augment my business. So, I don't make money from my blog site, but yes, I do get a greater income because I blog. I don't run ads on my site because most of my clients shouldn't run ads. I try to model what I teach.

What’s your most interesting story related to your blog and blogging experience?

Multiple times over the course I've been recognized (outside of my home state) by folks who read my blog. Usually happens in a Panera Bread location.

What’s the one biggest opportunity that came to your because of your blog?
I've been blessed with some great, great, friendships. Wow. Unbelievable friendships.

——

These questions are only a sample of what's in the book. There are other questions I would've loved to see:
 - How much time to do you invest weekly in blogging (both the writing of yours and reading of others)?
 - What tool helps aide your blogging the most (i.e., Zemanta, Compfight, MyBlogLog, other)?
 - What other social media space do you use most often (i.e., FriendFeed, Twitter, etc)
 - If blogging were no longer available, what/how would you replace it?

I'll be sharing a short presentation at the workshop I'm doing tomorrow and will post here afterwards. Again, I recommend this book as a text every blogger should read.

One of my favorite parts of this book is seeing what these bloggers are reading (or at least suggesting to others).

What five blogs do your read regularly? (here are some of the more popular answers (and I recommend each of them as well):

Though there are more than five regular reads for me (and aside from my partner Angela Maiers), here are the five I spend the most time with:

Chris Brogan
Mack Collier
Garr Reynolds
Wesley Fryer

** Kathy Sierra hasn't updated Creating Passionate Users in almost two years. The posts are still relevant and inspiring. I subscribe to the feed and visit the site often.

Five in the Morning 022509 – A Guest Whistle Stop

Fiveletters
I’m a big fan of Steve Woodruff’s 5 in the Morning series. It it brings the daily cream of the crop right to the top. This morning, I’m honored to be guest hosting this great series:

Thanks Steve for letting me guest host this series.  Hope I can do it again sometime. Keep that train rolling.

ConverSnaps #1 – Connecting, Networking, and Hugging

Ginger Johnson and I launched our podcast series this morning. What’s it about?  Well, we’re still organic in where we’re headed, each of us bringing our own special strength and profundity. This morning, we discussed a bunch of topics:

  1. Criticism: Is it good or bad?
  2. Is “I Don’t Get It” a valid reason for not doing something?
  3. The Importance of Face-to-Face and how computers affect (enhance?) it.
  4. Hugging

It was a fun conversation.  Listen in:

We’ll come your way again next week’s ConverSnaps show (our working title), Tuesday, March 3 at 6:30 AM.

Blog Blazers: What is the Most Common Pitfall for New Bloggers?

BlogBlazerBook
I've found Blog Blazers to be a gold mine of instruction. That's why I'm recommending it to my students in one-on-one and classroom settings. Stephane Grenier quizzed 40 fantastic blog authors on how to create a high-profile, high-traffic, and high-profit blog.

This week, I'm sharing some of my findings

Open to a page. Any page. I turn to page 160 – drat! only one third of the page is full — it's the end of the Penelope Trunk piece. Yet, there's still gold in this nugget:

"…blogging opens tons of doors — via networking, especially because bloggers have access to people they would not otherwise get access to."

Anyone who has invested the time in blogging (both the reading and the writing) can attest to this as fact. Of course, those who haven't invested the time think blogging is full of lint (they blame it on the blog).

So let's look at one of the questions Stephane poses, along with some answers:

What is the most common pitfall new bloggers generally fall into?

  • Al Carlton: "They expect instant results and quit too early."
  • Asha Dornfest: "Trying to affect a cynical, snarky blog persona. I can't STAND authors who throw around negativity in an effort to appear intelligent or edgy. Come to think of it, I don't like people who do that in real life, either.
  • Benjamin Yoskovitz: Not linking to other blogs in an effort to keep visitors from leaving (one of several tips on this from Ben)
  • Dane Carlson: Not posting and then apologizing for not posting.
  • David Armano: Self doubt will kill you.
  • Pamela Slim:  They get sucked into statistic paranoia…As soon as you start to select content just to provoke incoming links, you are doomed.

There are a couple of themes repeating on this question:

  1. Too many quit too early (or don't write often enough)
  2. Too many write about themselves without considering what their reader wants to read
  3. Too many want big numbers in a hurry

My own answer to this question:

New bloggers are so hungry for someone to read their post (or comment on it), but they don't do likewise. Go cultivate relationships and conversations away from your blog. What goes around comes around.

How would you answer this question?

Tomorrow we'll take a look at who these bloggers look up to (with some of my own heros).

I Don’t Get It!

Shrug
When I was 6, I hated spinach. I just didn't get it.

When I was 12, the thought of kissing a girl made me want to eat spinach. Didn't get it.

When I was 15, I didn't want to be a kid anymore.  Didn't understand.

When I was 32, I thought email was stupid. I didn't get it.

When I was 41, blogging was a bunch of noise.  Yep….I didn't get it.

Thank goodness I'm no longer 12.

Not "getting it" shouldn't be reason for not doing it.

Props and Panera to: Chris Brogan

I really love how various Central Iowa Bloggers gather at Panera U (map) to collaborate. This morning, I would have enjoyed to have coffee with Chris Brogan – just to say thank you.  So I did (sorta):

Thank you, Chris. You've got a golden gut to what people want and need.  Better yet, rather than being satisfied with talking action, you lead us by taking action.

And he's findable (too much so?) Google Chris' name.  Almost a million results.

Hope we can share coffee offline soon.

Blog Blazers: A Gold Mine of Blogging Tips & Direction

BlogBlazerBook
There are a lot of blogging books out there. Many are good, but I've found Blog Blazers to be a gold mine of instruction. That's why I'm recommending it to my students in one-on-one and classroom settings. Stephane Grenier quizzed 40 fantastic blog authors on how to create a high-profile, high-traffic, and high-profit blog.

This week, I'm going to share some of my findings

First, let me say I'm a bit biased towards this book. I follow many of those interviewed, including:

Each author was asked 24 questions about their site and writing habits. Some make money directly from their blog, some use their site to augment their business. In every interview, I took away something. Here are some of the "money" quotes:

Joel Cheesman: "Don't rely too much on one tactic (mix in podcasts and videos with the written word)

Eric Sink: Most people don't realize how much endurance is necessary. They start a blog with the lofty goal of writing a 500 word entry every day. A month later, they've written four entries and feel like quitting

Bob Walsh: (It takes) A minimum of 3 months, more like 9 (to become a successful blogger).

There is so much in this book, I'm not going to be able to cover it in one post. Tomorrow, we'll look at some of the questions (and I'll provide my own answers to those — hope you will too).

If you're coming to the Drake University workshop on Saturday, we'll be talking a lot about this book.

Whistle Stops – 2/22/09

Whistlestops_39_3
Whistle Stops are conversations, eye-openers, or tools representing the
brain train discovered while traveling along the Conversphere.  From
business to education, life hacks to giving back, these are the posts and
links that have in some way grabbed my attention!

This week's Highlights:

Next week:

Too Many? Don’t Run Away. What’s Your Purpose?

Books
A boy walks into the public library for the first time and drops his jaw. Unfortunately, it wasn't from excitement. He was overwhelmed.

"A lot of books, hmm?" the librarian asked.

"Too many!" he said. "Maybe I shouldn't read ANY books."

He quickly turned and headed for the door, never to return.

 —-

A sad story for sure.  I hear similar stories every day…multiple times a day.  From teachers and business people, parents and college students.

But they are in the role of the boy, not the librarian.

A key to getting started is to define your purpose or task. What is it you want to read or listen to? Find the voices worth paying attention to and follow their lead.

There is much brilliance in the conversation spaces such as the blogsphere and the twitterverse.  Define your purpose. Engage. Get smarter.
