Several folks have asked me what bookmarklets I use in my work. Though I have buttons for FriendFeed, Magnolia, Diigo, and VodPod (in addition to the StumbleUpon toolbar), the ones listed below are the standards I use to mark and watch content in my daily infosumption
—–
A good portion of my work is coaching companies on how to listen to the blogosphere, paying attention to what’s being said and how users are sharing information that is important to the company.
There are three buttons I use often when visiting a company site or a blog that mentions the company I’m working with:
- Google Blog Search This
- Technorati This
- del.icio.us History
As an example, let’s look at KitchenAid (random choice)
- Google Blog Search This shows us 43 blogs linking to the KitchenAid site.
- Technorati This shows 83 links (and we can sort by freshness or ‘authority’)
- del.icio.us History shows 50 users have bookmarked the site, using tags ranging from Kitchen to Cooking (what – no dishwashers?)
There is another button I use when we find a blogger talking about a company:
- Technorati Blog Info
When we find a blog post about a company, this button gives us a bit more insight into the frequency and popularity of the blogger writing the post.
I have these buttons on both my Explorer (Links Folder) and Firefox (Bookmarks Toolbar) browsers. The links below are the scripts that create the buttons mentioned here.
For Firefox users, simply click and drag the link into your Bookmarks toolbar.
For IE users, right click and Add to Favorites in the LINKS folder.
Google Blog Search This
Technorati This
del.icio.us History
Technorati Blog Info
Here’s to smarter surfing. Remember to Search Once and Subscribe.
UPDATE 02/06/08: On occasion, I lose the bookmarklets in my Firefox. Because of this post, I regain the ‘Surf Smarter’ buttons. To make things complete, I’m also adding a link to the other delicious bookmarklets I use for easy reference.

Find Your Social Media ROI
I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.
