Blog Posting Mantra #4 – One Link Out

People I work with kinda get drilled on the Blog Posting Mantra, especially the centerpiece at No. 4 [cupping my hand to ear to hear from the back pew]…

Blog Posting Mantra #4: At Least One Link Out

The challenge many business people and busy bloggers have is, well, time.  Who has time to look for links? I hear (and feel) your pain. Still, linking out is important and there’s a quick-n-easy way to go about it.

If you’ve already put your ear to the blogosphere or practice Search Once and Subscribe, you’re ahead of the game. But you probably shouldn’t always link back to the same folks daily. So how do you find a post worthy of your link and in likkety-split fashion?

Find the Link in 5 Minutes or Don’t Link Out

Remember, Blog Posting Mantra #1 (Write the Post) comes ahead of # 4 (Linking out), so find the key phrase in your post.  In the recent Pruning Your RSS Bush, I had two such phrases.

First, I did a blog search for each phrase. Sometimes, you’ll need to use quotes for a phrase and it may take a minute to get the right search string. Here’s what I look for:

  • Author Name: A blog with an authors name under the headline.  I’ll have a better link if the author’s name is JohnStephens than if it’s admin2 or JBoy23459.
  • Relevant Content: Post-to-post, not so much blog-to-blog.  If I’m writing about jewelry (a rare thing, but ya never know) and I find a political blogger who happens to be talking about buying a necklace for his wife…I may link out if their post has relevance and value to how my post reads.
  • Authority: The only reason this gets a bullet point is because folks will wonder where I stand on linking out to some super blogger.  If Stephanie A-Lister has a relevant post that adds value to my reader, I’ll link to it. If Tom brand-new-blogger has one, I’ll link to that. Also remember, we’ve only got five minutes to find a post.

Okay, let’s exercise.  Everyone in blogging position?  (I haven’t written that post yet – but great idea!)…

Here’s a key phrase in our exercise. Do a search (Google, T’rati – whatever) and report your findings in the comments or via email:

Exercise Key Phrase: creating good habits

What post would you link out to? Do you use quotes? Which search engine?

Follow on Twitter or Facebook or on Google+

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

As you know this is a mantra I need to practice. I did a quick Google Blog Search on “creating good habits”. At first I found http://www.adventuredad.com/archives/teaching-your-kids-about-money/ – teaching your kids about money, but it is too long and does not link to any other blogs. So assuming it actualy fit the context of my post, I like http://www.virtualmoxie.com/2007/04/12_rules_for_se.html – 12 rules for self management.

Thanks for the link out to our Top 77 list! I’m glad it came in handy. See ya around!

    Mike:
I like looking at your rules. Here’s what I found:
Authority blogs: My Five Self-Imposed Blogging Rules 6 May 2007 by Rosa Say — a response to a question from Terry Starbucker on how to right a great blog post… Rosa was one of the first blogs I started reading early on…
Self-Management? April 12, 2007 by Lisa Haneberg — Wow, one of the books from the SOBCon’07! There must be a pattern here.
    Startup blogs:
    Better X-mom – MySpace Blog · 18 days ago · Authority: 1
Not good. Have to be logged in as a MySpace user to view.
How i Make $1000 a day with Adsense!!!
    Authority: 2 · Rank: 2,057,036
Looks like a fake blog, also not good.
Conclusion: It’s easy to find good blogs to link to with a lot of authority, much harder to find a good startup blog. I did find one in 5 minutes:
A dentist post with only 4 links, but He’s been blogging since 2005 and has some GREAT info on his blog.
    Pediatric Dentistry Authority: 4 · Rank: 1,108,613

As I run into useful sites I add them to Blinklist and Del.icio.us; and also add other people that I find to add good resources. So I ran a search there and here are a few that I found:

I am just beginning to blog. My blog (
http://ela0327.typepad.com/gift_idea_help_unique_gif/) went public Friday, June 1 at 4:00 PM. I have just made 2 posts today and included links in them. I am truly trying to follow Mike’s rules and Blog Posting Mantra #4. With the Google Alerts and Google REader (RSS Feed), I have a lot of ideas for posts and comments. I am not sure what a metaphor.

I would link to http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Cannon19.html (Creating the Life You Desire with Ten Daily Habits).
But how does a blogger fit this in when one runs more of a story theme blog? Did Dooce ever link out? I find that bloggers may like it when I mention other blogs, but then some of my readers get in my face when I stray away from mom humor and stories of Brian for bloggers. It is a tough tightrope for me.
