LinkBait or Helpful Resource?

Darren Rowse compiled a list of resources on linkbaiting earlier this year.

Was his post linkbait or helpful resource? Depends on the author’s motive and the audience’s response.

If you’re your link is simply to get the attention of the original author and hope they link back to you, it’s probably not a great idea. However, if your hope is to provide value to your audience, thank you for sharing the resource (especially if you add your two cents).

I’ve written previously that I find great value in the daily link posts. Others may disagree. I’ll read ‘em; you skip ‘em. I hope the authors don’t stop.

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

Author’s intention vs. reader’s interpretation… I’d say the latter trumps. If the author posts something and intends it merely as linkbait, but as a reader I find something of real value in it, then the author’s original intention really doesn’t matter – at least to me as an individual.
As readers I think we sell ourselves short – we need to understand that what we bring to a book, or article, or blog post… as a reader… is just as important as what the author is telling us. The most obvious examples of this are when the author shares an analysis based on a set of facts, but our own experiences do not bear out the same “facts.” Or the author shares an opinion, but is unconvincing in his/her argument. We then draw upon our own experiences to say, “I disagree” or “this person doesn’t know what s/he’s talking about.” We use the combination of the author’s words and our own reaction to determine the ultimate value of the work (and, sometimes unfairly, of the author personally).

I agree Mike, it’s all in the intention. I also enjoy them at times. Though I like it best when there’s a short statement about why I should read the link. Sometimes it’s just nicer to be able to click a link then to sift through an entire post.
I also notice that I pay more attention to links from authors I know, like and trust.
