Are You Blogging to Attract Search Engines?

As I work with business people in building better blogging habits, the question eventually comes up, "How should I write to attract search engines?"

Though I want to ask how many search engines they have as a customer, my answer is simply, "Write to attract people."

Maybe we can agree Content is King (Design is Queen), but Community is the Kingdom it serves. That said, let’s understand that search engines have content too – relevant search results.

Put yourself in search mode for a minute. You Google a phrase and are provided links that have little or no relevancy. You may try a few different word combinations for a bit, but if you don’t find what you’re looking for, who ya gonna call?  Yahoo-oo!

So, if a search engine continually provides irrelevant results that are no help in finding something, users (humans) will go elsewhere. Who searches for irrelevant?

I’m not saying SEO is dead (though it’s always changing). But as a business person who is blogging, you have a business to run and customers to talk with. So talk with them.

Unless your customer base is a bunch of robots and spiders, write your blog like you’re talking with people.

Follow on Twitter or Facebook or on Google+

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

As we like to say in Texas, “It’s the content, y’all!” Too many keywords, like too much salt, can ruin the taste.

This makes a good point. Some people spend so much time thinking about search engines, that they can make a site that works great for Google, Yahoo, etc….but when people find their site through that search engine, they don’t like the site and don’t decide to return. So then, what was all the SEO they applied worth? Nada. If they work to grab people’s attention, then people will link to their site and that will end up attracting more people without search engine help as well as a higher search engine ranking. You will all around. I just realized I could’ve made a blog entry about this and I’m leaving it in a comment. heh.

    > Glenn, that’s a recipe I can share with folks here! Thanks
    > Devon, we’ll look for the upcoming blog post:-) Everything we do (design, usability, content) should always be for people. They (we!) are the customers of all those search engines, right? Thanks for adding to the conversation:-)
