Habits for Better Blogging in ’07 – Recognize and Record

Over these last few days of 2006, let’s cover a few ways to lift your blogging efforts to a new level in 2007.

Recognize and Record

Recognize the ideas racing through your head and the metaphors as they present themselves.

Whether you’re getting on a plane or waiting for your ice cream at Cold Stone, watching a ball game or listening to a child ask curious questions – recognize how these things align with your business.

Record these tidbits as they happen.

One of the best business habits I ever picked up was simple, inexpensive and helped prepare me for what I do now.  A small notebook. A pen. Never leave home without them.

Steve Farber calls it a WUP (Wake Up Pad). I like it so much, I’ve adopted it.

This video of Crossword-Maker, Mearle Reagle shows how valuable this habit can be:

There it is. Habit 1 for Better Blogging in ’07: Recognize and Record. And we haven’t even turned on the computer yet.

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

Great idea Mike, yeah, it seems like the greatest ideas for my blog posts always get into my head as I am standing half squashed in the train or the bus, or just somewhere that is quite impossible to open my laptop to jot the points down.
I have tried using my mobile phone to record the points, but its pretty hard to type. I think the traditional pen, and small notebook is the best by far!

This is a strategy I have adopted. I keep a notepad on the console in my vehicle – to capture ideas as I shuttle the kids.
Another strategy I have started using is the draft mode in WordPress – I have 4-5 posts started and saved that I can go back to later.

I bought one of those money-clips with a place for my Bullet Space Pen. I also keep a few extra business cards in there in case I’m without my notecards (or HipsterPDA). Business cards work great as a quick-and-dirty place to capture ideas, and with my Space Pen with me, I always have something to write with.

This is such a basic tip, yet so often overlooked. And the beauty is that a little notebook and pen fit almost anywhere, are entirely portable and require no outside energy source.

    >Kian, another great tool is the micro-cassette recorder. Plus, you could conduct a few interviews on the commute:-)
    >Char, Drafting posts has become essential for me too. Though sometimes they can get backed up (ask, Phil G. about that one:-)
    >Tony. Business cards (part of the next habit) are a great backup plan. Have you ended up giving notes away?
    >Carolyn, love the quip about no outside energy source. Pick the right pen, though. It might not run out of battery, but is there anything more frustrating than a pen running out of ink?

It happened once, and fortunately the guy saw the notes and gave it back. But said he was impressed with the ideas I jotted down, so win-win!
Now I keep cards to give out face up in the front, and cards with notes on them face down in the back. It allows me to easily differentiate them.
