Whaddya Mean, Silence is Golden?

Yep. In the blogoshpere, an active community is gold – but silence is golden, too.

Though it’s especially important for new business bloggers to keep in mind, it’s also important for experienced bloggers to consider.

When we first begin blogging, most of us scurry looking for blogs to comment on or link out to so that we get a solid foundation of readers. Even then, the readers don’t always comment or link back – but they are there.  And they are valuable.

Exhibit A: Last week, Gavin Heaton shared a fantastic video on his Copywriting Migraines post. I must’ve told everyone I knew to watch the video. I told them via email, phone, or in person. Two I know posted the video on their site. Another told a colleague of his – and that colleague posted it. I didn’t comment on Gavin’s site or post about it myself. As far as Gavin knows – I remained silent.

UPDATE: Have you ever meant to hit "Save as Draft" but went "live" instead? Only to get a comment before finishing the post?

So…what ‘silence is golden stories’ do you have? Maybe you were the silent party, delivering offline even though you didn’t comment online…

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

    Great explanation of the power of non-online word of mouth. Blogging is not about generating readership but about sharing ideas — being interesting. If you focus on that — remain curious about your world (whether that is a personal or business blog) and then a readership will follow.
    And, to be honest, I found that video on the very clever Marcus Brown’s blog — http://marcus-brown.blog.co.uk/

    I find the silent stuff really interesting. Its fun to share, it’s great to discover something new and it’s exciting to find something as brilliant as the video you’re talking about.
    @Gavin. You’re too kind.

    Gavin and Marcus – thank you both for sharing the video and your comments.
    Amongst the silent community may be our most enthusiastic evnagelists. Discovering, sharing ideas, learning, creating — each so valuable in the blogosphere. Hard to see, Hard to measure…yet cornerstones of the blogoshpere.
    You’re right Gavin, the relationships and readership will follow.
