Quotes n Notes: Perfection

Qoutenote_3_1People throw away what they could have by insisting on perfection, which they cannot have, and looking for it where they will never find it” – Edith Schaeffer

I know many who insist on having ALL their ducks in a row before launching their product, proposal or blog post. Ducks are living, moving, breathing beings. Their They’re always on the move.

The only sure-fire way to get your ducks aligned perfectly is to kill ‘em – but then what do you have left? Dead Ducks. That wouldn’t be good.

Even if you think you’ve attained perfection…as soon as you release your product, proposal or blog post – one person’s opinion will take it down a notch. Now how do you feel? Defenses come up? Closed-minded?

Release the Ducks.

Paul Lemberg’s article, Ten Entrepreneurial Mistakes has been echoed around the blogosphere. Check out # 8.

Better Get In Motion or Youll Be Stuck With Dead Ducks

This morning Mike Sansone posted a quick note on Perfection.
Do you struggle with wanting everything to be just so before you get started? Are you looking for a sure fired guarantee that you will see the results you want so you can take…

Did you see Seth Godin’s post today on the perfect time to start?

It’s funny – I read his and then yours – you guys are on the same wavelength today!

    Hi Mike,
It would have have been more professional, had I contacted you yesterday, before I used the Edith Schaeffer quote when it was attributed to Edit Schaeffer. Can’t undo what’s done, though. (shoulda, woulda, coulda; didn’t)
If you’re wondering, I found you through Chris Cree. Love his work and his recommendations (you being one).

Hi Ann, Something in the cosmos I guess…
Hi Carolyn, I humbly apologize for my typo (the attribution originally quote “Edit” instead of “Edith”) – sorry about that.

    Mike -
    This post was perfectly timed.
I had a convo yesterday with a good friend. He has some big dreams but has been holding off until everything was “lined up” and he had everything he needed to get started.
Yesterday we talked about launching one of the big dreams… even when things aren’t perfect and even when there are still some questions to be answered.
He decided to take some first steps towards those goals.
Well, I was able to forward your post to help confirm our conversation. I think it was the reinforcement that he needed to make the move.
Thanks for doing what you do brother!
    Blessings to you!

With pleasure, Mitch. Release the Ducks!

Mike, I love this post! I got this image of all these tiny ducks with their sad little feet in the air, something I’d sure want to avoid. Your post struck a chord with me because I have to lecture myself periodically on not over-doing my quest for perfection before action.
I think it also struck a chord with me because I worry about the folks who go too far in the other direction…they don’t even worry that they see not a single duck in sight, just jump into their expert’s hat and figure they’ll stay a chapter ahead of the people they want to sell services to. Yikes, those folks scare me.
It’s all about balance…neither end of the duck continuum is a particularly good spot to operate a business from, for either our sakes or the people we serve.

Great point about balance, Tammy. We shouldn’t launch buckshot either, hmm?
