Hey Blog Coach – What’s With the Blogroll?

Blogroll Isn’t it great that blogs, like people, are organic and evolving? After all, there’s only one Immutable Law of Business Blogging, right?

I have had some folks ask why I don’t have a blogroll on my blog. Don’t I think they are important? Yes, yes I do think blogrolls are important. And, there are different ways to use blogrolls. I point out that I have a separate page for my blogroll, and then they ask why I have so many!

Ben Yoskovitz suggests the use of blogrolls may be getting out of hand – by neglect, not usage.

A blogroll can be a list of those who you consider part of the community you’re most active with – as in the case of Joe Thornley.

Jason Preston shares why sites on his blogroll are different than those he reads regularly. I like that idea. Apparently, it works for Jason and his audience.

What about asking permission first? Lorelle VanFossen answers this question in-depth. Ignat Drozdov provides a bit of blogrolling Pro and Con.

We can see that a blogroll can serve in different ways and different audiences. Here’s a way to ACE the blogroll challenge:

  • Association – Blogs listed may be those who you interact with – online or offline.
  • Commonality – Blogs on your list will attract instant commonality. "Hey, if they read Scott Weisbrod, too – they must be alright."
  • Extension – By extending the conversation outward, you become a resource for your readers.

As for reciprocity, I’ll never ask for return links. Bad form. Let your blogroll be a benefit to your audience. If you provide value on your site and add to the conversation on others – you will find yourself appearing on blogrolls.

As for the ConverStations BlogRoll, I hope you find it valuable. Many have shared compliments. It is a tool I use, sharing it with the business people I coach and counsel, giving them a foundation of good blog reading and blogrolling.

I’ve recently added some new, and removed the stagnant (thanks for the reminder, Ben). Note some of the additions (most found via MyBlogLog):

Arts & Inspirations: Carolyn Manning
Blog Strategy: Daniel Scocco, Divya Uttam
Blog News: HitchHikers Guide
Careers and HR: Harry Joiner, Justin Driscoll
Entrepreneurial Spirit: Sherry Heyl, Stefanos Vasdekis
Leadership and Management: Jamie Parks, Kent Blumberg
Marketing: Douglas Karr, Pamela Heywood
Tech & Web 2.0: Ian Delaney, DJ Neawedde
VC & Deal Flow: Howard Lindzon
Writing & Journalism: Robin Seidner

We’ll be making some changes soon to the ConverStations blogroll page. New tracks are being laid for the growing list of businesses that blog.

How do you use your blogroll? Do you find value in the rolls you see on other sites?

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

Thanks, Mike for a great roundup on blogrolls. I’ve been wresting with the best way to include one, and was considering borrowing your idea of a separate page – maybe along with some other resources.
I’m with the camp of including blogs in your niche and those that compliment your own blog. I have hundreds of feeds in my reader, so including them all would be kind of crazy – especially since the topics are so varied.
I like the different views you provide. Great stuff.

Mike, I’m with Tony in the I’ve-been-thinking-about-copying-your-idea of how you presented your blog roll.
Is that three column table layout easy to put together automatically in TypePad? Or did you have to code the table by hand when you edited the page?

  • http://www.converstations.com Mike Sansone

I coded the table with a WYSIWYG tool (Dreamweaver? I forget) wihtout anything in it.
    Three colums, one row.
Then I pasted the code for each of the typelist modules in each column. Shouldn’t be too hard for WordPress – I hope.

Hey Mike! Thanks for adding Ministry of Tech to your blog roll!
Great post about blog rolls too. Your site’s great, love your content, keep it up!
    Cheers!

I think I have a case of blogger sensory perception (bsp) going on (More on that here). Just last night I was thinking, a blogroll could really be a page in the site, not just blog bling along the left or right of the page. Low and behold, look what you have… a blogroll page in the main nav!
    Thanks for the link love.
    Scott

    >Thanks DJ – and ditto:-) Thanks for sharing your tips.
    >Scott:-) Love the BSP – but you knew that already…somehow.

Great reminder, Mike. I recently went through the massive SOB list and found several that no longer existed. What kind of service was I doing my readers by having them there? My bad. :)

“Arts & Inspirations”, love the description. Thanks so much, Mike.
Dedicating a post to your blogroll is a wonderful idea. (Well, especially since I was on it.) :)

    Mike,
Thanks so much for your kind words and link on your massive blogroll. That’s fantastic! I’m going to start working through those sites… I already have a reader that jumps over 100 posts in a few hours, but I can’t get enough!
I’ll be returning the favor soon!
    Warmest Regards,
    Doug

Doug, I did so with pleasure. And the favor wwas first given when I visited your site. Love the SNAP feature!

  • Andy Beard (plus more on blogrolls)

I would be tempted to do a little more with the SEO on your blogroll, but you have taken the vital step of removing it from your sidebar.
A long blogroll in the sidebar has the tendancy to suck a website dry of all the pagerank it would otherwise be able to transfer to internal pages.
I would even take it a stage further and make the link to your blogroll on your single pages a “nofollow” link.
Plenty of pagerank is already being transferred from the link on your front page, and your header template can be slighly different on internal pages.

Networking is a very competitive field for a management coach. Others told me that using interlinking websites might make a difference in getting found and recognized as an authority. Did you notice some positive effects with using this site?
