The first steps are not as much about writing the blog, but thinking about the blog. To do this, we look for answers to the questions found in Purpose Drive Blogging.
We also think about keywords and categories. This helps us focus on the company’s blog, but it helps in other ways:
- find blogs to point to (adding value to our readers),
- find blogs to comment on (building a community)
- tags when we claim the blog on Technorati.
- keywords in our meta tags
I normally ask for 6-10 words or phrases, and let the rest grow organically. While those questions are pondered, we start building out the site.
We first want to make sure the blog is not public so search engines won’t begin indexing it yet. On Typepad, you can do this from the Configure Screen:
As for design, since this will be the Blue Frog Arts web site, we’ll be using Advanced Templates and Domain Mapping to give the site its own look and feel. So we’re not too concerned with which template to choose.
However, we do want to include as many TypeLists and sidebar items before we convert to Advanced Templates.
To begin working on the design, we create a simple test post
By having the blog behind public view, it also allows us to build our blogging muscles, even though it’s as easy as email.
Next, we’ll look at configuring the blog with a description, keywords, categories and how to start building a blogroll.
