Is a Saturated Market Bugging You?

PestsA few weeks ago, I was speaking with a young pest control professional who wanted to start his own business.

"I’m thinking of going into business for myself, but it’s already a saturated market." I asked about the marketing research that proved his point. "The Yellow Pages are full of exterminators."

Guess what my advice was…(Think Blog)

First stop, search the Technorati blog directory. Only six blogs have "pest control" tagged as a theme for their site. The only current site is actually a sales letter. However, searching all blog posts for "pest control", we find 27,527 posts about the subject, including this one from the MetaFilter Community Weblog: It Feels Like They’re on me Right Now.

In fact, people talk about "pest control" quite a bit. From Technorati’s results:

Next stop, Google’s Blog Search for "pest control" shows about 6,300 posts. Still not finding an exterminator.

We scoot over to the iBlog Business Directory and search for "pest control" – still nothing.

I’d say it’s a wide open market for someone that wants to be found.

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

    Mike:
Do you think a blog can be effective for a local business person — like an exterminator — since it’s such a wide-open forum?
Without trying, I get visitors from all over the world, but that’s not very helpful to a pest control guy.

Great question, John. Not only effective, but also cost efficient.
First, the local business person becomes more Findable.
Second, a blog site is often more Affordable.
Third, most of the ads in the phone book say the same thing. A blog can build Trustability.
If we’re able to build national, even global relationships with a blog, we should be able to do the same locally.
If you can’t be found locally, it’s going to be harder to do business locally.
On IowaBizEvents.com, I spotlight events and speakers as a public service. Quickly, the blog (which has no SEO – it’s simply a template) has surpassed some of the speakers own websites.
Additionally, one of the speakers was offered a speaking engagement because someone saw their profile on IowaBizEvents.
yes, the far-reaching nature of blogging isn’t going to help do business for the localized business…but it will improve Findability

Hey mike…send me some pest control sites my way!
BTW- We’ll begin spidering blogs with RSS at the end of the month. Hopefully, this will allow us to catch some of those pests:)
