Then Again, Quit Using Bloglines

As an update to my previous post (and I’ll stand by what’s written), I will no longer be suggesting Bloglines as an alternative aggregator – until they fix a big problem.

I just tried to subscribe to this blog via Bloglines. Four choices came up (even though it’s all the same feed from FeedBurner- and my code only points to this feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Converstations.

Bloglines

I’ll need to find a different solution if Bloglines makes subscribing so difficult. Hope I can find one in time for tomorrow’s workshop. Thankfully, only 30+% of our subscribers use Bloglines.

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

Mike – Bloglines concerns me too. Tonight I can’t even export my subscriptions unless I use IE instead of Firefox. I’m trying the free version of Newsgator (http://www.newsgator.com) Give it a shot. I’ll share what I find too.

Mike, do you necessarily need a web-based RSS aggregator?
I use Feedreader (v 3.04) and I’m very happy with it. Easy to install, easy to use, dead obvious how to import new feeds or OPML files or set up folders.
    Best wishes on your seminar!

I will give Newsgator another shot. Haven’t used them in awhile. Let us know what you find, Phil

Hi Shaula. You’re right, FeedReader is a fast and easy stand-alone tool. I think you and I may be among the lucky ones that use one computer.
Though I rarely use Bloglines to read feeds, for the companies and customers I work with, they sometimes need a feed reader that can easily go from one computer to the next.
You bring up a great point with the OPML file. If you do use two computers, do you get in the habit of transferring via OPML?

My problem with bloglines is about 2 days ago they stopped updating the feeds that I regular read with them. (Though the ones I host their bot still checks once a hour or more often).
I find bloglines to have a nice format and is easier than messing with installing programs on different platforms.

Newsgator is too slow. I’m on the lookout for a better option too. Let me know what you find Mike. I want a hosted tool, that I can save the clippings for, that will import my OPML file, be FAST, and allow me to mark all as read. Thoughts or recommendations?

Fred, I’ve also grown fond of Bloglines ease-of-use, but this fix is an important one. I’ll post more on this later, but they’re all over our conversation here and working on this.
Phil, Don’t stray too far from Bloglines – this could get fixed pretty quick. I hadn’t tried Newsgator yet, so I’ll keep an eye on it.
Shaula, I may tap into your resources soon.

Well, I would have to disagree with everyone about Bloglines… I have been using Bloglines since 2003, and I have not had any problems with importing, exporting, editing, etc. As a matter of fact, check out my blog http://www.christianconnett.com – All of the links in my blogroll are AUTOMATICALLY pulled in via Bloglines.
I utilize Blogines in the office, at home, and on my laptop, as well as with my site to maintain my favorite links, etc. which I have been completely happy with, despite occasionally flaws.
Would you like to see del.icio.us as an installed app, or technorati? If you use multiple computers, the answer would be NO.
I have faith in Bloglines. Nothing is perfect ALL the time. Remember when TypePad was going slower than a slug? ( read: http://www.sixapart.com/about/corner/2005/10/the_ups_downs_o.html )
I think that you could get a lot more benefit out of Bloglines, if you just give them a chance… Have questions? Let me know, I would be more than happy to help out!

    Bloglines, my friend

There is a conversation going on regarding some folks that are unhappy with Bloglines.  I would have to honestly say that I am COMPLETELY happy, and pleased to use Bloglines.  I aggregate ALL of my feeds through them, although I do not publicize them…

Except for the slow part, NewsGator has been my favorite for a while. NewsAlloy, Rojo and Feeds2 are all on my “to review” list” as well.

Bloglines seems to have fixed their old showing new problems. I’m back with them. They’re just so easy to use, and portable. Newsgator just wasn’t quick enough for me.

I spoke with Blogines at length (more on that soon) and they said this thing I’m facing had to do with my htaccess file.
Two good points: 1) Their response and help and 2) they are going to be looking at how to provide a more clear message to users on certain items.
Again, more to come on Bloglines early in the week.

I am SOOOO happy to hear that Bloglines is making strides toward a common goal with us all. As I stated before, I have been with Bloglines since 2003 – and I utilize them for my Blogroll on my site, as well as being my aggregator.
Mike, I am pleased to see that you didn’t just write them off, as I am sure that others in your situation have done already.
I would really like to know how this all turns out!
