Is It Time to Fire Your Web Developer?

Is your web developer still providing the "next level" of technology and allowing you to communicate with your customers more efficiently?

Here’s how to find out:

You: "Do you have a solution for offering RSS or Content Feeds?"
Them: "Yep, sure do."
You: "What tool do you use to read your own personal feeds?"
Them: "Oh, well…we don’t have time to read feeds."
You: "You’re Fired."

Or maybe pose a different question:

You: "Do you have a solution for offering RSS or Content Feeds?"
Them: "Yep, sure do."
You: "Do you also have the ability to track or measure traffic of the feed?"
Them: "No, only if they actually click on your site."
You: "You’re Fired."

One last one, then an example of how this web developer will hinder your efforts:

You: "Do you offer a solution for blogging?"
Them: "Yes, we have a proprietary tool that works like a blog that our team created just for our clients."
You: "Great (not really, but you’re being nice). Which of your clients are using it? And, do you use it?"
Them: "No, we really haven’t had any clients ask about using blogs."
You: "Then how do you know yours works? You’re Fired!"

When you publish a feed, an aggregator or browser should recognize your feed – not every instance or type of feed….ONE FEED. Otherwise, you run into the confusing problem Robyn had to deal with.

And this is exactly why and how I got into blogging myself. I don’t want to be fired! I have been a web developer for 10 years and feel that it is always good to stay one to five steps ahead of my clients!

I think its time to fire my Web Developer after reading your article. It was hard enough to get him to add the google sitemap to my website without asking for an RSS feed. I do my own blogging and have received good results. Thanks for all the helpful info that I find on your site.
