BlogTipping Day

As it’s the first of the month, it’s BlogTipping Day. The sites I read are plentiful (here’s a list) and diverse and so are the tips.

BlogTip #1: Zoli’s Blog
Author: Zoli Erdos

I read this blog because:

  • He consistently introduces new tools and widgets – sharing insights
  • Though I rarely visit the actual site (slow load), I like how he shares his Calendar of Events and more so, his del.icio.us tags (I’m going to implement the latter) – sharing knowledge
  • Lots and Lots of content, lots of humor and wit.

TIP: Aggregators and Browsers are auto-discovering this feed: instead of this feed (../blog/index.xml) instead of your FeedBurner feed (http://feeds.feedburner.com/zoli). Here’s a quick fix I wrote about earlier: Are Your FeedBurner Feeds Auto-Discovered?

BlogTip #2: Adventures in Home Working
Author: Steve Richards

I read this blog because:

  • His content always stretches and exercises my own thinking process
  • Excellent use of graphics and bullets (The best use of graphics this side of Kathy Sierra)
  • I don’t get envious much – if at all, but I want to work in this office space!

TIP: Would the use of tags (Blog Posting Mantra #6 & KeoTag: HTML Free Tag Generator) improve Technorati updating your site? They haven’t done so in 51 days!!

BlogTip #3: Why My Blog Stinks
Author: Steve Remington

I read this blog because:

  • Steve shares great tips on how to improve a blog site.
  • He doesn’t use reverse psychology to confuse the reader..or..I’m confused – point is, he gets the reader thinking.
  • The site is interactive with polls, contests and his Blog Analysis feature.

TIP: Three for free (I’d have to charge you for the fourth)

  1. Keep going with the You Write the Cutline series. It’s great practice for writing headlines.
  2. Full feeds, please? By combining your WordPress blog with FeedBurner’s FeedFlare (Add a Comment Flare). More comments (and therefore visits) are sure to follow.
  3. Always remember, don’t ever forget – Blog Posting Mantra # 4, will make your site better yet.

That’s it for this month. Thank you to the above authors for sharing their thoughts and passions. You make me smarter.

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

Tip #2 for Why My Blog Stinks has already helped me. I knew about FeedFlares but had never looked into them, so I just added a few of the standard options to them.
We’ll see if that creates some more conversation on the blog via the feed…

  • Steve Remington

Hey thanks for the blog tipping! I will look into the feedflares most definitely. I wasn’t quite sure the “You Write the Cutline” thing was much of a hit. Didn’t get much feedback on that. I will keep it up and see how it goes.
    Thanks Mike from IOWA :)

    Hi Mike,
Wow, I’ve never been “tipped” before, thanks :-)
As far as I know, blogware/blogharbor does not give me access to the head section, so I can’t remove the default feed. However, they must have made some changes, for now my reader can discover both – the feedburner and the original feeds.
    Thanks again,
    Zoli

Ben, I also wrote a post for creating your own FeedFlare. If you need a hand, let me know:

I like the cutline, Steve. I’ll put my thinking cap on next time. Once comments come rolling in, it could be a winner (just like your blog)

Zoli, I’ve long been meaning to thank you for your efforts. Too bad about BlogHarbor not giving that access, but at least the option for FeedBurner is there – just hope everyone picks that – you may have 51,000+ yet:-)

Great work here, Mike. Now I’m going to visit a couple of these blogs I didn’t know about …

  • http://www.converstations.com Mike Sansone

Easton, thanks for your comment. One of my goals with BlogTipping is to introduce the ConverStations audience to blogs that might not be on their radar.
Blogging is a great platform for extension – both reach and conversation.

“As far as I know, blogware/blogharbor does not give me access to the head section, so I can’t remove the default feed.”
Of course we do. ;-) I just repointed Zoli to our instructions for doing so.

Super good, John. There are some great blogs using Blog Harbor – inlcuding Steve’s above and Raj Setty’s blog.
