A Day in My Life: Juggling the Clock

Time is still the biggest hurdle (crutch?) we face in launching a new blog or subscribing to feeds. My counsel is use a kitchen timer for some of the tasks – and don’t swing for the fences with every task.

Here’s what my morning looks like (I wasn’t this quick six months ago – it takes time to hone scanning muscles):

  • Quickly glance over the 500+ feeds (focusing on headlines and authors). This includes watchlists and blog searches for the sites I work on and people I work with (20-30 minutes)
    • Alert customers of posts/stories that may interest them. Del.icio.us potential Whistle Stops. Lock and save other items for later reading.
  • Check my calendar and email, reply to emails, respond to blog comments, confirm any question marks. (15 minutes)
  • If I don’t have a blog post scheduled to publish, I write one – like I’m doing today. (20 Minutes)
  • Off to the races. I’m not able to write posts or delve into feeds until after 5:00 PM. Some days I travel, some nights I have workshops – even less time to do these things. (10-12 hours)

This post took 23 minutes to write, insert hyperlinks, tag, publish.

Really it’s a matter of priorities. Are you ready to extend your company’s reach and engage in a conversation? Do you have ONE hour a day you can devote to blogs and feeds?

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

Thanks for posting a sample of your schedule. it’s interesting to me to see how others manage time. I like the kitchen timer idea because I always tell myself that I’m going to spend “just 15 minutes” reading blogs or whatever, and I end up surfing for an hour or more!

Blogging sure allows us to hone our self-discipline doesn’t it?

23 minutes – you’re faster than you may think, Mike. I wish people understood just how hard it is, given the tools we have available to us in 2006, to personally mine truckloads of information each day and attempt to synthesize and respond to it all in meaningful ways. Good job!

Yeah, but then I goof and take two days to respond. I gotta get a new clock:-0
