Joshua Kopelman at Redeye VC shares that his partner at First Round Capital, Howard Morgan has also started blogging Way Too Early.
Though it’s not Dr. Morgan’s first try at blogging, I’ll bet he”ll persist with this effort. Why? In his recent post, The 6th P of what makes a good venture investment, the sixth is Persistence.
I see similarities between a good venture investment and what makes a good business blog. Per Howard’s list:
- People – A good business blogger will be someone that is honest, intelligent and hardworking. They should enjoy working and talking with others.
- Product – The blog should have a target audience. Might be national, might be local – but a good blogger will write towards their audience – all other readers are a plus.
- Plan – The blogger should have a plan for the site. What will a successful blog effort look like? how do you want your audience to respond.
- Profit – Yes, I believe that a business blog should have a positive impact on the profits. Building great relationships is a key, but how often does the blog promote your business services? Chris Baggott does this well.
- Passion – Howard says that an entrepreneur must exhibit real passion fo the idea for it to be an attractive investment. Same holds true for a blog. Don’t think so? I have three words for you: Horse Pig Cow. Too many words? I’ll give you one more: Gerbyshak. Need a shorter word? Mary.
- Persistence – Sticktuitiveness. I’ve worked with three students in launching a blog, spent 30 days teaching them – and they haven’t posted since. I know one is waiting for an audience to show up before he posts again. Not gonna happen.
Thanks to Joshua for the tip on Howard’s blog – they’re both off to a great start. Joshua launched his blog just a month ago.
I’ll call these the Six P’s of Business Blogging Practice. Not to be confused with Steve Rubel’s The 4 Ps of Blog Marketing (Passion, Purpose, Present and Position) to which I’ve added Participate.
