Whistle Stops – 03/19/06

Whistlestops_1 As we prepare for our Get Started Blogging workshop on Tuesday, will visit some posts on the how-to of business blogging. If you haven’t registered yet, only a handful of seats remain.

Some of these are older, some are new. All are good instruction, here are just a few:

  • Requirements for a Great Corporate Blogger by Jeremiah Owyang at Web Strategy by Jeremiah (feed): Pay close attention to the list of reasons NOT to have a corporate blog. (P.S. Nice Redesign)
  • What Should Be Your Corporate Blog’s URL? by Stephan Spencer at Scatterings (feed): Do you agree with the hypothetical example Stephan shares?. Two key abilities in business blogging are find-ability and link-ability.
  • Much Ado About Blogging by Heather D. at Viaspire (feed): Heather finds three fears that companies have are Trust, Control, and Commitment. I’ll add a fourth – Time. Frankly, each is a crutch. If conversing with customers is important, a company will make it happen – either offline or online, sometimes both.
  • Corporate Blogging for Quality Relationships from DailyIndia.com: " "The blog is a mainstream phenomenon, not a fad."
  • Secrets of Corporate Blogging from BrookGroup: I’m not sure any of this is a "secret," but good info nonetheless.

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

Thanks Mike, Glad you like the redesign, took me quite a few hours this weekend!

Jeremiah – A great spa and makeover. It has me thinking about how often a blog should get a makeover. I know of some personal blogs that change weekly – too often for a business blog, but an interesting thought.
    Maybe a quarterly tweak?

Hi Mike — Great catch and correction on my entry about Much Ado About Blogging! You are absolutely right in adding “time” to this mix. Committment should have also addressed the time factor, but as I read it back, I completely ommitted that from my stream of blogging-consciousness! Thanks for clarifying this point and adding it for better context! I find it is defintely one of the most reasonable fears for businesses to consider before jumping in on the blog-bandwagon. I think the committment and investment into your business blog is critical for credibility and encouraging a continued following on your site. Thanks again!

Heather – thanks for expanding even more:-) It’s not just about finding time, but commiting to that time. If the efforts of a business blog aren’t sustained – it’ll actually backfire, won’t it.
Keep up the great work, I look forward to reading more.
