Fears of Blogging: Time

Fears_1 WARNING: If you’re not blogging, this post is might either anger you or compel you to start blogging.

"I don’t have time," is an issue excuse that keeps coming up to avoid blogging. Some are followed with further justification:

  • "…I’m too busy finding new business."
  • "…with all the networking I have to do."
  • "…I can’t even keep up with my email."
  • "…besides I wouldn’t know what to write/say."

Throw away the crutches and stand up like a business leader. All the above are lame excuses FOR NOT blogging. In fact, the justifications are actually great reasons TO START blogging.

Let’s have a look-see:

  • Finding new business: Start a blog, improve your visibility and find-ability.
  • Busy networking: Blogging is a form of networking. It doesn’t replace one-on-one, but extends your reach beyond your current level of imagination.
  • Too much e-mail: Blogging can actually cut your e-mail time. You’ll find yourself linking to blog posts as an answer to an e-mail. Sometimes yours, sometimes from another blogger. Need more help? Check out Inbox Zero
  • What would I write/say?: This last one is almost funny. Have you ever given a PowerPoint presentation? Re-purpose that and expand on the thought for each slide (there’s a dozen posts). Have a brochure? Conversationalize it and deliver the message a different way. Seriously, if you met a new/old customer at Panera – wouldn’t you say something? So, write it!

A business blog is a place to have a conversation with your colleagues, customers and prospects. By saying you don’t have time to blog – you’re telling them you don’t have time to talk with them.

Don’t use time as the excuse. There are other legitimate reasons not to blog (we’ll go into those another time). A lack of time shouldn’t be one of them.

It’s a matter of priority. If developing customer relationships, finding new business, positioning yourself as a leader in your marketplace, or networking with colleagues is important to you – you will make time to blog.

Otherwise, your business is on crutches.

I blog a lot about “efficient blogging”. I think many people fear blogging because of the time factor. I have a busy life so have figured out how to blog in about 20 minutes per day.

Jim – Thanks for sharing here and on your blog. As the CEO of a $1 Billion company, you set a great pace.
And your article on Efficient Blogging is now part of our Blog Workshop curriculum.

Time… I’ve been thinking about time so much lately, especially since I don’t get nearly enough sleep, the thing is… you can always find time. I’ve never been one to have a light work load but watching others with less to do in a day wondering where the time went baffles me.
So here is the thing with blogging from my stand point… you can post a blog on your site and it can lead to hours of reading other peoples sites and commenting etc (which is really, the whole point of it) or you can post and walk away from the blogosphere (impossible..I say). However, really it is self decipline…
That being said… it truely is like therapy… so whatever your situation… I say FIND THE TIME!

FIND THE TIME…a great mantra for any business, yes? We must find the time to reach out to our customers (be they clients, employees, vendors, etc) or lose them altogether.
Thanks for the input Lucia. I know things get busy at The Blog Studio.
