I Hear a Train a comin’..

I was speaking to a local web design firm and asked when they were going to start blogging. They said they hadn’t yet decided their stance on blogging. Hmm.

"I hear the train a comin’, it’s rollin’ round the bend…"

It’s not the first time I’ve heard this from a web development company. My suggestion to each has been:

  1. Start blogging now.
  2. Design your clients sites with blogging in mind. Be ready to pull that trigger.
  3. You’ll be able to implement it faster when they begin blogging.

Some web (under)developers think blogging is a fad. Frankly, I think they’re worried about their jobs.

If your company is looking to launch a blog, keep Nos. 49 & 50 of Jeremiah’s Business Blogging Best Practices in mind:

  • Don’t hire any firms to help you with a blog strategy that are not blogging themselves.
  • Don’t hire any firms to help you that suggest the reason to blog is ‘because blogging is hot right now’.

To those web designers/developers who don’t know where they stand on blogging: You’re standing (sleeping?) on the track and there’s a train already on the move – and headed in your direction.

Get on the train or don’t, but for your own sake – get off the track.

Find Your Social Media ROI

I hear it from a lot of business owners: “Where is the ROI with all this Social Media?“ If this is a question you ask yourself, maybe we should work together a bit more. We can work together solo, or via a professional learning community. Find and increase your ROI. There is a “there” there.

    EXACTLY! you’ve hit the nail right on. The train is about to pull away from the station and many individuals and companies are getting on — and some are not.
    you’re correct when you write that the focus is on the conversations that occur (customer-customer, or company-customer) this is the disruptive change.
    Blogs are just a tool that faciliate this converations, and will someday be replaced by another tool.
    I like your slant on the world, and as such, I’ve subscribed. Thanks for the quotes

    Mike – love the lyrics and I hope a lot of people hear the song you’re singing!
    It is fascinating to think of “conversation” as the disruptive change that is happening, as Jeremiah suggests above.
    What is disruptive about conversations?
    I’m working on my list of answers but I bet you and people like Jeremiah are way ahead of me!

    “What is disruptive about conversations?”
    That’s a great question, when we relate to business, research shows that consumers trust other consumer above all other.
    A few years ago (pre web or pre blog) users were restricted to conversations within their ‘immediate’ network, or obtaining content from a top down channel of information (such as brochures, press releases or other enterprise created content)
    Now, becuase blog are so easy to use, and are nearly free (commodity software) consumers can easily connect and converse with each other –and companies can either watch this happen, or will be totally oblivious to what’s happening in their marketplace.
    As such, Markeing and Advertisting efforts are now diluted, as consumers can communicate directly with each other (conversations), rather than obtain information from a company –and that’s what’s causing the shift in power to consumers!
    Check out the “Naked Conversations” book by Robert Scoble and Shel Isreal as well as the “Clue Train Manifesto” these books are a great foundation to build upon.
